INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

1. Evaluate the presence of trauma, foreign bodies, nasal polyps, and deviated nasal septum in the nasal passage.

2. Take a supine position, select an appropriate nasopharyngeal airway (the diameter of the patient's little finger can be used as a reference), and measure the length from the nose tip to the earlobe to determine the insertion depth.

3. Spray anesthesia or ephedrine (not necessary in emergency situations), and apply paraffin oil to the catheter.

4. Insert the inclined plane towards the nasal septum, parallel and backward along the bottom of the nasal cavity (about 13-15cm), until the tail reaches the outer opening of the nasal cavity. If encountering resistance, gently rotate the airway and do not forcefully enter. If the patient coughs or resists, retreat 1-2cm.

Indications for Nasopharyngeal Airway

Spontaneously breathing patients with soft tissue obstruction of the upper airway

Sometimes for dilation and anesthesia of the nasal passage to prepare for nasotracheal intubation

Nasopharyngeal airways are better tolerated and are preferred rather than oropharyngeal airways for patients who are obtunded with intact gag reflexes.

Nasopharyngeal airways can be used in some settings where oropharyngeal airways cannot, eg, oral trauma or trismus (restriction of mouth opening including spasm of muscles of mastication).

Nasopharyngeal airways may also help facilitate bag-valve-mask ventilation.
